First Thing you do in the Morning?

Listen for my son from his crib, if I have a chance I grab water with lemon and start the coffee before the morning chaos ensues.

Two Words that best describe your teaching Style

I took a poll and the two words that kept popping up were motivating and interactive. One client said Princess of Darkness, but that doesn’t count since it is three words and she usually calls me that after she’s done the series of 5.

Favorite Place to Travel

The South Luangwa National Park in Zambia and Grenada, West Indies is a close second.

Reading, wine, evening walks with my family and I’ve been trying meditation, but I tend to end up thinking about my grocery list.

Training/Education: I have a background in classical ballet, and also grew up training in tap, jazz, & Irish step. In 1997 I trained at the Center for Fitness in Winchester Va, where I learned personal training on the job, and worked with a wide range of clients using weight training and cardio. In 2001, I became interested in the work of Joseph Pilates and how it impacted the elite 1930’s New York Dance world. I obtained my certification in Pilates mat work at the Physical Mind Institute in Washington DC. I then worked as an instructor at my family’s Pilates Studio in northern Virginia for 14 years, with many satisfied clients including doctors, physical therapists, dancers and athletes.

During that time, I trained under the owner, working with clients on the reformer and other pilates equipment. I’ve attended numerous workshops to further my understanding of movement, teaching, and the human body, including: anatomy, fascia, contraindication modification equipment, exercise rings and bands, foam rollers, reformer and standing pilates, but my all time favorite class to teach is beginning fundamentals.

Career before Pilates: I am an artist, writer and educator. I have home educated my 3 children for the past 15 years, and have tutored many other students. My eldest began his college career last year as a dual enrollment student, and is studying computer science. I have also written and directed several plays for children’s theater.

First Thing you do in the morning is?

Take a deep breath and drink a glass of lime water.

Two words that best describe your teaching style?

I asked a client and she said, balanced and regenerative. I would tend to describe myself as encouraging and thorough.

Pilates Exercise that challenges you

Back extension exercises like double leg kicks, but those are the ones that keep my back pain free!

If you could ask Joe Pilates one question what would it be?

I would want to hear all about the years he was in the internment camp during WWI, where he worked with the other inmates and began to develop his method, Contrology. It is said that these inmates survived the 1918 flu pandemic due to their good physical shape, and the Pilates breathing exercises.

How do you unwind?

Relaxing with my family over a good meal, or reading a book/watching a movie together.
